Forever Ago is currently Steam Deck Verified on the official Steam listing. Valve’s recorded compatibility checks say the default controller configuration is fully functional, the game shows Deck controller icons, interface text is legible, and the default graphics configuration performs well. This is stronger than a community compatibility guess, but it is not a published frame-rate, battery-life, or every-scene benchmark.
What Verified establishes for this game
Valve defines Verified as working well on Steam Deck by default across input, display, seamlessness, and system support. For Forever Ago, the stored test fields specifically indicate working default controls, Deck icon presentation, legible interface text, and acceptable default graphics behavior. The metadata also reports successful SteamOS operation.
That makes the stock path the right starting point: install through Steam, allow the client to choose its recommended compatibility runtime, keep the official layout, and launch with the game’s defaults. Do not add a custom Proton build or community controller template before observing the verified configuration.
The compatibility record is associated with a dated test and a Steam BuildID. A BuildID identifies Steam-delivered build data; it is not a semantic version such as “1.0” and should not be presented that way. A later patch or SteamOS update can change results even while the badge remains current.
Start with a clean Deck launch
Update SteamOS and restart the Deck if an update requests it. Install Forever Ago from the account’s library and leave Compatibility → “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool” disabled for the first run. That allows Steam to select the runtime attached to the Verified configuration.
Use the default controller layout and game graphics preset. Confirm that movement, interaction, camera, journal, menu navigation, and photo selection all respond before changing anything. Let shader or first-launch processing finish rather than judging a transition that occurs only once.
Sign in online for installation and synchronization, then verify the Cloud state before resuming a save used on Windows. The compatibility metadata reports no required internet connection for setup or single-player after installation, but Steam licensing, downloads, and Cloud still have their own online needs.
Keep performance claims inside the evidence
Verified does not publish a fixed FPS target. It also does not specify average battery life, fan noise, resolution scaling behavior, or how a particular late-game scene performs on every SteamOS revision. Do not turn “default configuration performs well” into a numerical benchmark that Valve did not state.
If the default experience is comfortable, leave it alone. For more battery time, lower one setting or apply a Deck frame cap only after recording the baseline. For smoother motion, first remove a custom TDP limit, manual GPU clock, or old per-game profile that may override defaults.
Use the performance overlay for your own diagnosis, but include route and scene context with any result. The camera, vehicle transitions, dream sequences, and wide outdoor stops can stress different parts of the system. A menu reading is not representative of the whole road trip.
Default first
Use Steam's selected runtime, official layout, and game-recommended graphics before adding overrides.
One change at a time
Separate a frame cap, graphics change, TDP limit, and compatibility-runtime switch so the cause stays visible.
Route-based test
Recheck a camera transition, outdoor stop, and journal scene rather than relying on the opening room alone.
Preserve Cloud state
Exit normally, wait for upload, and do not alternate devices while Steam reports a conflict.
Troubleshoot controls and launch behavior
If inputs stop responding, open the Steam controller layout and return to the official default. Disconnect external controllers so the built-in Deck controls remain the first active device. Restart the game after changing device order; hot switching during a photo or menu scene can leave ambiguous prompts.
If the game fails to launch after a custom Proton selection, remove the forced compatibility-tool override and verify installed files. Restart the Deck once. Do not download replacement DLLs or copy a Windows installation over the managed Steam library.
If text or glyphs differ from the Verified record, capture the language, SteamOS version, game BuildID, compatibility tool, display mode, external monitor state, and controller layout. The exact configuration makes a report useful.
Use Cloud safely between Deck and Windows
Forever Ago officially supports Steam Cloud. Finish the current interaction, exit through the game menu, and wait until the Deck reports synchronization complete. On Windows, compare the Cloud timestamp and last recognizable road stop before launching.
If a conflict appears, stop and identify the newer known-good progress. Do not automatically choose Cloud because it is remote or local because it is physically present. The save-location guide explains the observed Windows backup path; Deck data is managed through a Proton prefix and should not be handled as if the Windows Run path applies directly.
The Deck badge does not mean the base game has a native Linux depot. The official Windows requirements and Steam’s compatibility layer can coexist with a Verified result. Describe the result as SteamOS compatibility, not native Linux support.

Status was checked on October 10, 2026. Current official Steam data takes priority over a lagging community database. Device-specific FPS, battery, and late-scene behavior remain live-test fields.
