This complete walkthrough follows Alfred’s road trip in story order. It identifies the purpose of every major stop and the kind of interaction that moves the journey forward. It deliberately avoids quoting dialogue or retelling the ending. Location names, companions, and late-route destinations are unavoidable spoilers.
Prepare before leaving the opening
In Alfred’s room, follow the camera tutorial and photograph the requested subject clearly. If achievements matter, inspect and photograph unusual objects before advancing; one published condition is tied to being a snooping photographer in the opening room. Learn the focus response here, because later prompts use the same visual language.
Once the trip begins, use the journal whenever the route changes. The opening drive establishes Alfred, Audrey, and the reason for travelling north. Let the conversation finish before looking for another input. When control returns at Woolson Falls, the current journal goal and the camera’s response should guide the first location rather than an attempt to run beyond the playable area.
Complete the falls and early roadside loop
At Woolson Falls, follow the accessible trail and inspect the location connected to Alfred’s memory. Explore side pockets before the final prompted photograph or departure interaction. If you notice petals, sweep the nearby ground and landmarks as a local cluster; do not assume they are part of the mandatory route. Complete the required camera moment, review the journal beat, and leave only after the scene has registered.
Karl’s Pump ‘N’ Mart is a compact investigation stop. Talk when prompted, examine the objects or areas that receive Alfred’s attention, and re-check the journal after each response. If the objective seems unchanged, stay within the active roadside space: the remaining interaction is more likely nearby than beyond an invisible boundary. Finish optional photographs before confirming travel.
At the Highway Star Diner, allow the arrival conversation to establish the task, then cover the public-facing area and any clearly accessible side space. Interact with the people or subjects the scene identifies. When a camera prompt appears, frame the intended subject rather than the entire building. The story advances after the local chain is complete and the journal recognizes the stop.
Follow the homeward change and Sam’s detour
The journey back toward home is a story transition, not a new open-world map. Listen for the reason Alfred’s plan changes and wait for control to return. At any pause, the journal gives the cleanest description of the next required action. Do not reload simply because the camera holds on a quiet road or conversation; the game often uses stillness deliberately.
Sam’s detour introduces a more practical task chain. Speak with Sam, inspect the immediate problem, and complete the available interactions in the order the scene unlocks them. If a single action produces dialogue but no departure option, look for the other part of the task nearby. Lower the camera before testing an object so that photography mode is not masking its interaction prompt.
Before leaving, take a completion sweep around the detour area. Use any genuine rest prompt and gather nearby petals if they are visible. Optional actions do not replace Sam’s required task. The checkpoint is complete when the conversation and travel path change, not merely when Alfred has looked at the central object once.
Cross the coastal stretch
Captain Marley and the Buccaneers’ Retreat is a larger change of tone. Follow the path into the active area, speak to the people the story introduces, and complete the playful environmental interactions the scene requests. Several public achievement names refer to unusual pirate-themed actions; reading the achievement guide will reveal more than the route requires. For story progress, stay focused on the prompted sequence and the journal.
Use the following checkpoint card when the objective feels ambiguous:
Winslow Lighthouse is navigated by following the accessible route toward the landmark and responding to the camera or inspection prompts encountered along it. If you lose the path, return to the last conversation point and look for the route that preserves line of sight to the lighthouse rather than trying to force a steep edge. Search optional side pockets before committing to the closing viewpoint.
Finish Williamina Peak and the epilogue
Williamina Peak is the final major destination. Follow the mountain path, let each story exchange complete, and interact with the views or objects the journal identifies. The pace becomes intentionally reflective. A long pause is not automatically a hang; watch for subtle camera movement, music, subtitles, or a returning prompt before opening the menu.
Near the closing sequence, avoid experimenting with save files or force-quitting. Complete each offered interaction and let the transition resolve. The guide does not spell out the emotional reveal, but the route is complete when the game moves from the mountain sequence into its epilogue rather than returning Alfred to an unfinished objective.
During the epilogue, continue to respond only when control or an interaction prompt is clearly available. Let credits and closing saves finish. If you intend to inspect achievements afterward, return to a stable menu and allow Steam Cloud to synchronize before changing devices.
Fix a route that will not advance
Read the journal verbatim and compare it with the last action that produced dialogue. Then revisit the immediate active area and inspect each distinct highlighted subject once. For a camera objective, lower and raise the camera again, center the named subject, remove foreground obstruction, and wait for focus feedback before taking the picture.
If a scene still does not advance, return to the main menu through the game, reload once, and repeat only the current objective. Keep the original save. A current Steam Community report describes a player blocked around van bolts, but that is a player report rather than a developer-confirmed universal defect; it does not justify a fabricated workaround. Record the location, objective text, input device, and build for the official bug thread.
Crashes or missing game files are a separate problem. Use Steam’s Verify integrity of game files option for installation repair. It will not necessarily alter story flags, so do not describe a successful file check as proof that a progression bug is gone.
Sources and verification boundary
- Forever Ago on Steam — official AppID, full-release status, features, and platform scope.
- Annapurna Interactive: Forever Ago — official journey, camera, encounter, and environmental-puzzle description.
- Into Indie Games complete walkthrough — location order and launch objective context, used as same-game fallback and rewritten into a separate checkpoint structure.
- Third Shift bug-report discussion — official community channel and current player reports; individual reports are not treated as confirmed defects.
The named route and objective categories are supported by full-release coverage. Exact trigger radii, every optional interaction, replay behavior, and later-patch differences still need live verification on the player’s current build.
